Once again, in clear, easy-to-understand prose, author Shean Smith (author of "Free Indeed") takes up his writer's pen to address the subject of getting free of organized religion in this latest work called "Soul Rape"... but this time he delves a bit deeper into the psychology of church mentality and its effect. Through his examination of history, psychology, Scripture and personal insight and experience, Shean suggests some strong answers to questions such as, "Why do people hate going to church, distrust clergy, avoid religion, but often continue to search for God?" What is it about "church" that occupies so much attention, both of those who attend religious meetings and even of those who proclaim freedom from it? Have Christians been wrong to worry so much about finding the right way to "do church" or where to "go" to church? The answers may shock or even offend some... but Shean handles the subject with heart-felt understanding, clear logic and biblical truth. This is a really good book!

Shean presents a bold conclusion; that the reason so many Christians find themselves struggling over the issue of "what to do about church" is because they are largely victims of what he calls "soul rape" - they have been taken advantage of by a fraudulent concept of church; one that looks godly but, at its core, is anything but. Even those who find freedom from it (by leaving oppressive organizations) still, often times, find they are affected by mindsets they learned while still under its influence. Those mindsets tend to infect every good intention they pursue so that, even in their so-called "freedom" from religion, they remain plagued by it.

While this revelation is alarming, Shean's book doesn't leave the reader with merely a victim mentality, but in fact seeks to call people to awake from spiritual slumber. He seeks to help pull the reader from the harmful mindsets of religion (that he was once influenced by as well) into a realization of true freedom in Jesus Christ; free of any further anxiety about "church".

"...a timely message that needs to be heard by every sincere follower of Christ, and especially among those in the 'church exodus' movement..."

In a recent e-mail Shean shared the following comment with me: "Anything meant to build up Christ's body should not cost anything. It is my desire that all people experience the freedom God has given." It is this attitude of heart that has also prompted Shean to offer his book entirely free of charge via electronic download.
